First photos, part 2

…so my brother and dad collaborated to get me an awfully sweet camera in time to document my baby girl’s birth. While I was (and am) terrifically excited over this new engine of expression, I was terribly nervous that I would not be prepared to do such a wonderful tool justice at that big moment.

It was clear what had to be done. Concluding a superb weekend of rest, and fishing, and fine scotch, and much laughter at a beach house for my brother’s birthday, a rehearsal was coordinated to prepare the photographer for the big shot. Mom assembled the staff (my brothers Cameron and Justin), Candice played the mother-to-be (method acting on it’s most dedicated level), ACe is our baby, and Dad stood over my shoulder to help me with the camera. Oh, and a couple of Justin’s good friends were in attendance as well. And his sweetheart Roxie. And her parents. (Welcome to the family everybody!)

It was a real experience for everyone in attendance. And now you can share in this beautiful moment too. Enjoy! (more…)

In grade school, we were once supposed to bring in a baby photo of ourselves to share with the class. Before the teacher had even finished explaining the assignment, I knew exactly what picture I would bring. It is a powerful piece in black and white that I would like to think captures my essence, and with all the subtlety befitting the subject. It’s just me held up to the camera, two-seconds old and hollering… all balls and big mouth. I am as proud of that photo today as I was in grade school.

It is my dad’s way of saying “This is you as I saw you the moment we met.” There is something at work in that photo that stands my hairs on end when I see it in that way. And it is an expression I hope to be able share with my daughter one day in one way or another.
