I met Coach Blair at some hidden hole in the wall Mexican place in Bryan back in the spring of 2006. It was a converted house where you grabbed a soda out of a cooler on the ground and the chairs didn't match each other. Well, being a big sports fan of A&M, I keep up with all things Aggie. I’m there in line, and I see this old man. I knew who he was, but never thought I'd run into a guy who made his kind of salary in a podunk shanty town of a restaurant in a hidden part of old Bryan.

He was sitting there eating a bowl of Menudo. I Looked at him. Looked awfully familiar. Is that? Is that the new coach? Then he looked at me, said "You and your friends need to get to the women's game, you're Aggies, aren't ya?" I said yes, class of 99 BUT, that I was just visiting for the weekend. He looked straight past me, out the broken glass windows all patched up with cardboard and duct tape, and said "that's no excuse, you're here on weekends? We have games on weekends."

I was a bit floored by his brash comments to a total stranger, but they kept with me. I remember thinking, Cool, I just met the Aggie Coach and he yelled at me. I eventually moved back to Bryan- College Station in 2007 and since then, have been to a quite a few games. I would sit on the floor right by the players bench. I could see them actually playing ball. Not some girlie game, but really play ball. After reading up on the guy and seeing what he was about, I hoped the best for him. The sacrifices he was making to be here. The history he has and what an awesome thing for him if he won a Big 12 Title here.

Well, we know the rest of the story. And what happened a few weeks ago can only be described as Amazing. Screw UConn and their history. Screw Stanford and their pedigree. Screw them all. A&M was the laughing stock of women’s basketball when he got here, and now, now, we sit atop of the collegiate world for the women’s game.

It couldn't have happened at a more odd place, and to a more deserving man.

This was an amazing piece! I loved to read about ACe. I found my dog, Brownie wandering around our school. I enjoyed this story a lot.

Great story, bud. Our recollections are a bit different, I see. :-) Of course, mine is based on the excited call of a son to a father as he conveyed in one, largely unbroken paragraph, the excitement of meeting the man with "wrists as big as my thighs, dad, really, I swear they are." And I believe Justin gave you the book as a gift....hmmmm, and let's not forget how you closed your phone call: "Dad, you know, I don't think that Coach Knight realized that he just signed a book titled 'The Science of Hitting.'" After which we laughed and you went on with your adventure.
